We run regular 8 week beginners courses to give students the foundational skills they need to fully take part in our regular classes. Courses run approximately every three months, depending on current capacity. If you’re interested, subscribe to the mailing list (on the sidebar) to get advance warning of future courses.

No prior martial experience is needed for these, and the classes cater to a range of fitness levels. In general the beginners course is quite low impact, but it should be understood that this is a physical martial art with a lot of movement.

Beginners courses generally cost £80 and run for 8 two-hour classes every Monday night in one of our Donegall Pass venues in Belfast. We supply all of the equipment necessary, all participants need are clothes they can move freely in, and comfortable trainers that won’t mark the floor.

The course content covers the fundamentals of the use of the 15th century longsword, and also touches upon the messer (a short single handed, single edged sword). Many of the techniques covered in the course are applicable to a wide variety of swords and can serve a good foundation for people wanting to go on to study other weapons in other places.
