Events are an important aspect of HEMA training as they offer the chance to gain insights from other instructors, possibly in other arts, and to train with students from other clubs and schools. Over the past few years students and instructors from Medieval Combat Group have attended events such as HEMAC Glasgow 2014 & 2016 hosted by the AHA, Féile na Gaiscígh 2014, 2015,2016, and 2017 hosted by Dublin HEMA Club, and the Kinsale Tournament 2014 hosted by West Cork Swordfighting Club, and the Fool’s Fayre fechtschule hosted by Leitrim Longswords HEMA Club. Various members of the group also competed in the inaugural year of the Irish Historical Fencing League, with our instructor Matthew Malcolm taking first place in three of the four tournaments and claiming the first League Champion title.
Our instructors Matt and Ross also taught workshops at the 2014, 2015, and 2016 Féile na Gaiscígh events, and Ross taught again at the first Belfast Bladeworks event in 2015.
Medieval Combat Group also attempt to regularly host guest instructors from other groups elsewhere in the world. In 2014 and 2015 the group hosted longsword workshops by Keith Farrell of the Academy of Historical Arts, and in 2016 a weekend long messer workshop by Hans Heim of Ochs. The class hosted the final tournament of the Irish Historical Fencing League in 2016, and will host the third leg of the league in 2017.
